A chimney cowl is essentially a cap installed atop your chimney. Its primary purposes are to block rain, snow, and animals from entering your home, whilst helping to direct smoke exhaust upwards and out. 

Chimney cowls are instrumental in preventing the entry of water and moisture, which can lead to corrosion and compromise the chimney's structural integrity. Additionally, cowls act as a barrier to deter animals from entering and potentially nesting within the chimney, which poses both a nuisance and fire risk.
