Frequently Asked Questions

How to Tell If Your Woodburner Needs a Service

A woodburner is the heart of many homes, providing warmth, comfort, and a cosy atmosphere through the colder months. But just like any hardworking appliance, it needs regular attention to keep running safely and efficiently. Many people don’t realise that a neglected stove can become dangerous—or at the very least, inefficient and expensive to run.

So how do you know when it’s time to give your woodburner some professional TLC? Here are the key signs your stove might be due for a service.

1. It’s Harder to Light or Keep Alight

If you’re struggling to get your stove going, or the fire keeps dying out, it could be a sign of poor airflow caused by a blocked flue, ash buildup, or problems with the seals or air controls. A good service will check and could clear all of this, restoring smooth operation.

2. You Notice More Smoke or Smell Indoors

A properly working stove should draw smoke up through the chimney with minimal indoor odour. If you’re noticing smoke in the room, strong smells, or soot around the stove door, it’s time to get it checked. These can be signs of blockages, poor seals, or ventilation problems—issues that should be fixed immediately for your safety.

3. The Glass Is Permanently Blackened

Occasional darkening of the stove glass is normal, especially after a long burn. But if it’s staying black even after a hot fire, it may point to incomplete combustion or air control issues. A service will ensure your stove is burning efficiently and cleanly again.

4. The Door Seals Are Worn or Loose

Check the rope seals around the stove door. If they’re frayed, hard, or you can pull a piece of paper out of the closed door easily, they’re no longer doing their job. Leaky seals let too much air in, making your stove less efficient and harder to control. Replacing door seals is a common and quick fix during a service.

5. It’s Been Over a Year Since Your Last Service

As a general rule, your stove should be serviced at least once a year—ideally in the spring or summer when it’s not in regular use. This allows for repairs and inspections to be carried out well before you need it running again.

6. You’re Burning More Wood Than Usual

If you find yourself going through logs much faster than before without more heat to show for it, something might be off. An inefficient stove often signals clogged airways, degraded seals, or internal damage—all of which can be spotted and resolved in a proper service.

7. Unusual Noises or Damage

Creaking, popping, or rattling sounds from your stove can indicate loose fire bricks or other internal components needing attention. Cracks, warping, or rust should always be checked by a professional before use.

What’s Included in a Woodburner Service?

A standard service usually includes:

  • Thorough inspection of all stove components
  • Cleaning of internal parts, including baffles and airways
  • Checking and replacing door seals
  • Cleaning the stove glass (where safe)
  • Chimney sweeping (if not already done)
  • Safety checks for ventilation and emissions
  • Advice on fuel usage and maintenance

Stay Safe, Burn Smart

Regular servicing not only extends the life of your stove but also protects your home from fire risk and carbon monoxide leaks. If in doubt, book a service—especially if you’re heading into winter.
